YUNIS KHALID, MAULVI (c 1935) Maulvi Yunis Khalid headed Hizb-e-Islami, one of the seven groups of Afghan mujahideen These groups were formed after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in December 1979 They operated out of Peshawar, the capital of Pakistan’s Northwest Frontier Province In the summer of 1984, the Hizb-e-Islami joined with the other six groups to coordinate efforts against the Soviet troops in Afghanistan Khalid did not play a prominent role in Afghan politics after the signing of the Geneva peace agreement and the departure of the Soviet troops from Afghanistan
