CONFERENCE OF MUSLIM WOMEN PARLIAMENTARIANS The first Conference of Muslim Women Parliamentarians was held in Islamabad, from 1 to 3 August 1995, chaired by Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan’s prime minister The idea of the conference was conceived by Ms Bhutto to prepare for the Fourth World Conference on Women, and to “give a correct view about the role of women in Muslim society to the West which often projects it negatively We want to show that the Muslim women are playing a positive role in top decisionmaking levels as parliamentarians, journalists and in other fields” The conference was attended by over 100 delegates from 35 Muslim nations and adopted a declaration on the role of women and women’s rights as envisioned in Islam
