CENSUS OF 1951 Pakistan held its first census four years after its birth The population count was taken in March 1951 The census estimated the population at 33780 million, of which 27761 million- or 822 percent of the total-lived in rural areas, whereas the remaining 6019 million-or 178 percent-resided in towns and cities The estimated rate of growth was 18 percent per year

The urban population had increased at a rate more than three times that of the rural population: 41 percent, as against 13 percent Pakistan added5458 million people to the population estimated in 1941 The increase was the result of both natural growth and migration of millions of people from India
